Fort Wayne is a city located in northeastern Nebraska, in Dixon County. Its population was 692 in 2019. Fort Wayne is situated in northeastern Nebraska on the north side of the Missouri River. The city lies near the center of Dixon County.
The area now known as Fort Wayne was first settled in 1854 by a group of German immigrants. The settlement originally was called Audubon, but was changed to Fort Wayne sometime after 1856. The city was officially incorporated in 1888, and its name derives from Fort Atkinson, an army post in the area that stood from 1819 to 1827.
