Evansville is a village in Knox County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 272 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Knox County. The village was named in honor of Jesse P. Evans, an early settler.
Evansville was founded in 1858 and quickly became a booming settlement. Its first business was the trading post of J. F. Shetz. The post office was established in 1860. By October 1861, the village had grown to 3 stores, a blacksmith shop, a shoe shop, a carpenter shop, and a telegraph office. In 1868, a jail and courthouse were constructed in the village. A split occurred in the village in 1880 when a large portion of the village moved 1 mile to the east, forming the new village of Wynot.
In 1878, the North Western Railroad built a branch through the village. This allowed for the village to regain its growth to become the county seat in 1889. In the early 20th century, Evansville suffered a severe setback when the North Western Railroad discontinued their branch. Although growth was hampered by the lack of a railroad, the village continued to survive and thrive.
Today, Evansville is a small farming and rural community, complete with a post office, bank, gas station and other small businesses. There are a few restaurants and a grocery store. It a great place for locals and visitors alike.
