Attica is a small city in Harlan County, Nebraska. The population was 391 at the 2010 United States Census. It is located within the county seat of Alma, Nebraska.
The city of Attica was named after Attica, New York, on the suggestion of railroad builder and financier John S. Hollenback. In 1887, during a celebration marking the completion of the Union Pacific Railroad branch line from Grand Island, a depot was built. With that, a village formed, and by 1889 it was officially declared a city. Attica quickly became an agricultural center with a number of grain elevators and a stockyard.
In the early 20th century, the town's principle crop was wheat and corn, and Attica’s population peaked at 1,250 in 1910. Over the years, the population has gradually decreased, although the city retains a strong agricultural presence and some small businesses.
