Whiting is the smallest incorporated village in Thurston County, Nebraska that is located on the border of Dixon and Thurston County. Whiting was established in 1871, when Thomas S. Smith and Dr. Robert Carpenter purchased the land for $12.50 per acre. Smith and Carpenter laid out streets and blocks and named the new town after John Whiting, a friend of Carpenter who had recently moved to Dakota. The incorporation of Whiting, NE was granted in 1902 and the village was incorporated as a village on April 28, 1910.
At the time of incorporation, the village was made up of several scattered small businesses including a hotel, mercantile store, post office, blacksmith shop, and livery stable. By the 1920s, Whiting had only a few businesses which included a newspaper, a bank and two grain elevators.
Whiting is a small rural community that has a population of only 78 people and is located approximatedly 15 miles north of Pender.
