New Castle is a city in Cedar County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 99 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Norfolk, Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Area.
New Castle was founded in 1912 as the name was changed from Plattville. It was named for its location near the Platte River. New Castle was a railroad town and many of the residents worked in the lumber and rail yards connected to the Burlington & Missouri River railroad.
The city continued to grow and by the late 1920s had five stores, two churches, a bank, a barber shop, a blacksmith shop, and a school. New Castle became a second-class city sometime after World War II with a mayor, city council, and a new city hall.
Today, most of the city's population is employed in agriculture. The town has its own volunteer fire department and post office. It is also home to a popular basketball court with two rims, which is a favorite gathering spot during the summer months.
