Austin is a city in Cedar County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 291 at the 2010 census. Austin is part of the Norfolk, Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Austin was platted in 1873 by the Cedar County Townsite Company. It was named in honor of A. B. Austin, an important figure in county history. Its post office has been in operation since 1873.
In the early years of Austin (1885), the town population reached approximately 400 to 600people. At that time, Austin was a "prosperous" little village. It was fortunate to have both railroad and telegraph systems and become home to a bank, two rooming houses, lumber yards, a creamery, and a hotel. As the years went by, the population went down to about 300 people around 1950. Even today, the population remains the same, however, the town is no longer "prosperous" as it was in the early days.
Today, Austin is a small but vibrant rural community with many people that call it home. The community still has the essentials such as a grocery store, a bank, a cafe, a post office, a church, a laundromat, and an elementary school.
