Carmel is a village in Platte County, Nebraska, United States, located west of Columbus, the county seat. The population was 183 at the 2010 census.
The village was established in 1886 by a religious society from Germany, under the leadership of the Rev. Joseph Immel. The settlers purchased land from the government, and upon the advice of Immel, the land was platted to include a Town Hall and a school. The first settlers were mostly from larger cities, and Carmel quickly became a vibrant community in the rural plains of Nebraska.
Carmel has weathered numerous economic downturns throughout its history, due to depressed agricultural prices. The village survived several financial disasters of this type in the early 20th century, and in 1935 it was declared a "bankrupt village". However, it eventually recovered, the school was rebuilt, and the town is now a vibrant agricultural community.
Carmel is also notable for its former German-language newspaper, Der Nordstern (The Northern Star). The weekly paper was published in the village from 1891 to 1910, and was one of only a few German-language newspapers still in operation during its time.
