Cedar Lake is a small unincorporated community located in the western part of Cedar County, Nebraska. It is northwest of Hartington, the county seat. The community is home to a post office, a volunteer fire department, an active cemetery, and several other community organizations.
Cedar Lake was originally founded in 1882 during the transportation boom played a part in the settlement of this portion of Nebraska. The name is said to have come from an early settler who, upon identifying the lake on his land, called it "Cedar Lake". During its peak around 1940, the population of Cedar Lake was approximately 300 residents. At present, it is estimated that there are roughly 50 residents living in Cedar Lake.
The Cedar Lake Post Office made its debut on April 1, 1885. The postmaster at that time was Samuel Leffel, who passed away just four years later and was the first burial in the Cedar Lake cemetery. The post office is still in operation today and serves the entire surrounding area, most of which is related to agricultural production.
The Cedar Lake Historical Society is responsible for maintaining and preserving the region's history. Established in 2013, this organization has been compiling records of Cedar Lake, the people who lived there and those who continue to, as well as the history of the surrounding areas. The Cedar Lake Historical Society holds an annual reunion in August in order to celebrate the community's history and culture.
The Cedar Lake area is a desirable location for many hunters, fishers, and other outdoor recreationalists. Ducks, geese, deer, and turkey can be found in the countryside andin the lake itself. It has also become relatively popular for ATV enthusiasts, who collect around the town each year for an annual mud run.
