Sullivan is a city in Cass County, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located just a few miles outside of Plattsmouth, the county seat, and is home to around 265 residents.
Sullivan was platted in 1883, and was named for B.F. Sullivan, a railroad official. The Omaha & Republican Valley Railroad constructed a line from Nebraska City through Greenwood to Plattsmouth in 1881 which allowed for the development of the city. Sullivan had a post office beginning in 1883, and in 1884 it had grown to become a village.
The city was incorporated in 1890, and was home to a public school, several churches, and other businesses. The town was quite small until the opening of a gravel plant in the 1950’s, which drew in new residents and businesses. In 1972, it merged with the neighboring town of Wabash in an effort to create a larger, more efficient government.
Today, the town is still quite small but is known for its agricultural industry and boasts several churches, a post office, and several businesses. It is a tight-knit community with strong ties to the land and the nearby historical sites.
