Burns Harbor is a small, unincorporated community located in Antelope County, Nebraska. The community is located on the eastern side of Antelope County, near the Missouri River. According to the 2010 census, there were 273 people, 113 households, and 73 families residing in Burns Harbor. The median income for a household in the village was $30,000.
Burns Harbor was first established around 1900 as a result of the construction of the permanent Nebraksa National Guard training camp in 1901. The town was named after a local rancher, James Burns. The town flourished during World War I and became a popular trading post for buffalo hunters, horses, and other commodities.
Burns Harbor was eventually incorporated in 1936, and it was a successful agricultural-based town throughout the 1950s and 60s. The economy further developed when the Missouri River was dammed in the late 1960s, creating Lake McConaughy. This brought new tourism and businesses, and the surrounding towns grew with it.
