The town was founded in 1910 by the Scherer Brothers, who purchased the land in the southern portion of the town that was originally part of Whiting, Indiana. The Scherers named the new community Schererville in honor of their father, Louis Scherer. In the 1920s, the town began to expand rapidly as waves of European immigrants moved to the area. Many Poles, Irish, Germany, and Italians came to Schererville and built substantial homes while working at the nearby factories. The town continued to grow and several industries were established such as the Aztec Foundry, Morris Dairy, and Home Food Stores.
