Bedford is a small city located in Fillmore County, Nebraska, United States. It has a population of approx 728 people. The Bedford area was first settled in 1874 and the town was platted in 1883. The city was named for the bedroom communities of Michigan and New York. The original town was nearly all destroyed in a tornado in 1902, but was quickly rebuilt.
The first public school was founded in Bedford in 1913. It is now known as Bedford Community School. The city is served by the Central Community School District.
Bedford celebrates its pioneer heritage with an annual Pioneer Day celebration in late June. The celebration consists of a parade and entertainment for both children and adults.
The city has a 5K run each year as well as a farmer's market each Saturday during the summer. Bedford also is home to the Fillmore County Pioneer Museum, located near downtown. The museum showcases artifacts and memorabilia from the pioneer days of the area.
