The settlement of Boonville was founded in 1878 by David Finch, Peyton Holcomb, and Thomas Conrad. It was named after a man named Lyman Boon, who was the first settler in the area and owned much of the surrounding farmland.
By 1880, Boonville had grown to include a general store, blacksmith shop, post office, school, lumber yard, newspaper, and a hotel. The village was incorporated in the same year.
The town remained relatively small and quiet for much of its early history. As of the 2000 United States Census, there were 103 people living in the village. The primary industries are agriculture and the local school. In recent years there has been a drive to improve the village, and a number of projects have been implemented.
