Alexandria is a small village in Dixon County, Nebraska located about 13 miles southeast of Ponca. The village was originally called Stoneridge, after John H. Stoner who settled there in 1865. The name was changed to Alexandria in 1890 due to the postal service's confusion over Stoneridge and another community in Nebraska with a similar name. This confusion caused residents to receive mail intended for them from the other Stoneridge.
Alexandria had its first school established in 1886, and eventually had a church, several stores, and a post office. At its peak, the village had a population of around 200. Unfortunately, these numbers dwindled until 2001 when only five people were left in the village. The majority of those left worked in the agricultural areas nearby, as Alexandria was and still is a hub for farmers in the area.
The city has recently seen a resurgence due to it being located near the new Niobrara State Park, one of Nebraska's largest parks. This has resulted in more tourism in the area, and has increased the population number slightly. Today, Alexandria is still a small village with only around 65 people, but it is slowly growing as more and more people come to enjoy the beauty of the Niobrara State Park.
