New Albany is a city in Burt County, Nebraska. It is located near the Wisconsin line along Highway 75, and is approximately 17 miles north of Omaha. The city was named after its first and progenitor postmaster, Colonel William Newell.
The first settlers to the area were mostly settlers from New York who moved to New Albany in 1856 after the Wisconsin Land Company purchased the area from the Omaha Tribe. The original settler, Roswell Randall, later deeded the land to the Wisconsin Land Company. With the arrival of then-U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in the area, the first mail system was set up, giving New Albany the title of “Post Town.” Roswell Randall was then appointed as the first postmaster of New Albany.
