Goshen is a small city located in south-central Nebraska, about 78 miles northwest of Lincoln. Founded in 1886, Goshen was originally named Benton after Thomas Hart Benton, a Missouri senator. In 1887 a local grain elevator operator encouraged the community to consider a name change to distinguish themselves from other Bentons in Nebraska and the local railroad suggested the name Goshen. Residents accepted the change and have been known as Goshen ever since.
In the late 19th century, Goshen was a major cattle and farming center. With the arrival of the Burlington Railroad in 1891, which offered easier transportation, many businesses were established and Goshen became an economic hub in the area. The Burlington Railroad is still used today.
Today, the city of Goshen is home to a variety of restaurants, shops, and businesses. It is also a popular destination for outdoor recreation, including camping, fishing, hunting, and hiking at nearby Fort Kearney State Historic Park.
