Greentown is a small unincorporated community in Platte County, Nebraska. The community is located at the crossroads of two major highways, US Highway 30 and Nebraska Highway 15. Greentown was named by a traveling preacher who arrived in the area in the mid 1870s and noticed the abundance of greenery in the area. The community was originally settled by German Mormon families who had left their homes in Illinois in search of religious freedom.
In the early 1900s, Greentown was a bustling town of several businesses. The most significant employers were the nearby Platte Packing Plant which processed meat for shipment across the United States, and the Glocke and Sons Mercantile which stocked provisions for nearby homesteaders. The town also had two general stores, a church, a school, a pharmacy, a milliner, a blacksmith, a hardware store, a livery stable, and several saloons.
A devastating windstorm destroyed many of Greentown's structures in 1914, and the town never fully recovered from the damage. The original schoolhouse was destroyed and rebuilt in 1920 on the same land. The school served the needs of small rural children for the next 50 years before ultimately closing in 1979. The school's building still stands and is the centerpiece of a small park in the center of town.
