The community was established in 1857 as a military post along the Oregon Trail. It was named by the first settlers after the nearby Fort Laramie, which was located approximately 30 miles to the north. Fort Branch was used as a temporary shelter and trading post by western travelers heading west.
By 1878, the fort had been abandoned and settlers began to move to the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1881 with a population of 36. Through the years, the population of Fort Branch saw a steady decline, eventually dropping to just 12 by 1950.
