The city of Hope was founded in 1884 when the railroad was built through the area. The town was located at the intersection of the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad and the Union Pacific's mainline. The first settlers of the city came from Hope Valley, Rhode Island, providing the name for the new town. In 1886, the first school was built, a bank was opened the following year, and in 1889, the railroad station was built.
The city soon grew and by 1900, it had a population of over 500. With the beginnings of the Great Depression in the 1930s, the city's population began to decline. However, by 2000, the population had risen to 616 and every decade since has seen further increases.
