Depends on whom you ask.
The Chinese monarchy defined itself as the 'middle kingdom' in the center of the world (see here for the name and problems with it) and expected foreigners to defer to China. This colored their intercourse with other countries, where an exchange of goods would be filed as 'tribute' and 'gifts to a vassal' by China. The other country might have filed the same event as 'diplomatic exchange of gifts with a foreign king.'
The case of Korea is closer to what you describe, but again the nature is not comparable to 19th century colonialism. Yet Korea did acknowledge the subordinate relationship.
Vietnam was also under Chinese control for some time.
