La Vista is a city located in Sarpy County, Nebraska in the United States of America. It is a suburb of Omaha that is located on the east bank of the Missouri River. The population was estimated at 19,150 in 2019. La Vista is the Spanish word for 'view' or 'sight', and is named after the city's vista of rolling hills and wide plains.
Originally, the land was occupied by the Omaha and Pawnee Native Americans prior to European settlement. In 1846, the land was surveyed and two settlers (William D. Bartlett and William Hogan) built a settlement near the confluence of the Platte River and the Missouri River.
In 1952, an Omaha developer named George Unkel purchased 1,616 acres of the original survey and formally established the City of La Vista. The City was incorporated on April 29, 1960, following a vote of the residents.
Since its inception, La Vista has supported a growing population with increased development and new businesses. Currently, La Vista is home to more than 19,000 people and is comprised of five distinct neighborhoods.
