Tekamah is a city located in Burt County, Nebraska. It is located at the junction of two of the state's highways, Nebraska Highway 32 and U.S. Highway 75. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 1,729.
Tekamah was named after Robert C. Thompson, son of one of the town's early settlers.
Tekamah's first buildings were constructed in 1855. By 1857, the town's population had increased and it was officially platted. The first church, a Methodist-Episcopal building, was built in 1868.
The town was largely a farming community early on, with the farmers raising wheat, oats, corn, and other crops. During the 1940s, the city began to transition from an agricultural oriented economy to a diversified one that included a number of new businesses and industries.
In the late 1970s, Tekamah was chosen to be the site of a nuclear power plant. Construction began in 1979, but it was later abandoned due to political, environmental, and financial issues.
Today, Tekamah is home to many clusters of small businesses that sell products and services to the local community. It is mainly an agricultural-based economy nd its closest industry is the agriculture-inspired dairy processing plant located just outside of town.
