Alliance, Nebraska is a city located in northwest Nebraska on the Niobrara River. The city was founded in 1889 and was first known as Grand Lake. The city was renamed to Alliance in 1891 after the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad arrived. During the Black Hills Gold Rush, Alliance provided the main railroad access to the area. In 1902, Alliance became the seat of Box Butte County. The city has since grown to a population of 8,789 as of the 2018 United States Census. One of the main attractions in the area is the Carhenge, an impressive recreation of Stonehenge made from vintage automobiles. Alliance also hosts numerous events throughout the year such as a farmers' market, artfest, free summer concerts, a rodeo, car show, arts & crafts festival, and the Alliance Balloon Festival. The main educational institution in Alliance is the Dinosaur Museum, which showcases fossils discovered in the area, along with other geological and paleontological exhibits. The city also has numerous parks and trails, including the Lorrain Decoy Nature Center, a sanctuary and wildlife refuge. Overall, Alliance is a great place to live, work, and visit.
