The city was founded in 1869 by Edward P. Hall and named after his friend, William W. Blair. For most of the twentieth century, Blair was a small farming and ranching community, although it also had a sizable amount of industry and was a major economic force for the county and area. The Great Western Railway line passed through the city for most of the century, and its presence greatly contributed to Blair's economic well-being.
