10 Must-Visit Cities in Florida, USA With Kids

If you’re looking for a family-friendly vacation spot, Florida is a top contender. It’s packed with activities that cater to children of all ages. Having visited several cities across the state with my kids, I can tell you from experience that Florida has something for everyone. Here’s a list of the ten must-visit cities in Florida that will keep your little ones entertained and make your trip memorable.

1. Orlando

Orlando is perhaps the most famous destination for families, and for good reason. I will never forget my first trip there with my kids. As we pulled into the city, their eyes sparkled with excitement, the anticipation bubbling over as we headed toward the theme parks. Orlando is home to the Disney theme parks, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and a multitude of other attractions. According to the Orlando Tourism Board, in 2019, the city attracted over 75 million visitors, with many families coming specifically for the attractions aimed at children. One of the highlights for my children was meeting their favorite princesses and superheroes. The experiences at the parks are truly unforgettable.

2. Clearwater Beach

If your family prefers a mix of beach time and activities, Clearwater Beach is a fantastic choice. The beach has soft, white sand, which is great for building sandcastles. Kids can also enjoy a dolphin-watching cruise. In 2021, Clearwater Beach was voted one of the best beaches in the USA by TripAdvisor’s Traveler's Choice, boasting over 62 million visitors. The beach is family-friendly, and there are plenty of activities nearby, including the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where kids can learn about marine life and conservation.

3. St. Augustine

St. Augustine is known as the oldest city in the United States, and it holds a wealth of history that can captivate children and adults alike. When I took my kids to visit the Castillo de San Marcos, they were amazed by the fort and its historical significance. Did you know that this fort was built in the late 17th century? According to the National Park Service, it’s one of the best-preserved examples of Spanish colonial military architecture in the U.S. As your kids explore the fort and stroll through the cobblestone streets, they’ll feel like they are walking through a living history book.

4. Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale may be known for its beaches and boating canals, but it offers a lot for families too. You can take kids to the Museum of Discovery and Science, which has interactive exhibits that engage young minds. Apparently, Fort Lauderdale had over 13 million visitors in 2022, and many of them were families drawn to its attractions. The Everglades is also nearby, where you can take an airboat ride that the kids will rave about for years to come. The experience of spotting alligators and other wildlife is sure to impress!

5. Tampa

If you want to experience a city that blends culture, nature, and entertainment, Tampa should be on your list. My kids loved Busch Gardens, an amusement park that combines thrilling rides with a zoo. According to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, Busch Gardens Tampa is one of the top-rated parks in the country. Additionally, the Florida Aquarium offers educational opportunities and interactive exhibits. There’s even a splash park to cool off after a day of exploration.

6. Miami

Miami is a vibrant city that combines culture, art, and family-friendly activities. For instance, the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens provides a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of the early 20th century, and kids often enjoy exploring the beautiful grounds. According to the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, the city attracts over 24 million visitors annually, with families increasingly picking it as a destination. Plus, the Miami Children's Museum has tons of interactive exhibits that will keep kids engaged.

7. Naples

Looking for a relaxing family getaway? Naples is perfect for beach lovers. With soft sands and calm waters, it’s ideal for kids who want to splash around. One of the treasures here is the Naples Botanical Garden, which offers children’s programs and vibrant plant life to explore. In addition, Naples is known for a robust art scene, including summer art camps designed specifically for kids. According to Visit Naples, the city has seen an increase in families visiting, making it a hot spot for family vacations.

8. Sarasota

Sarasota combines beautiful beaches with rich culture. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is particularly engaging for children. They can learn about different plants and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Additionally, the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium offers a chance to interact with marine life. The city has seen a steady increase in family tourism, with over 2.5 million visitors in 2022, reported by the Sarasota Convention and Visitors Bureau. Parents appreciate the balance of relaxation and education.

9. Panama City Beach

Panama City Beach is where you can have a fun family vacation filled with sunshine and outdoor activities. Apart from its beautiful beaches, the city boasts attractions like the Gulf World Marine Park. Tragically, Hurricane Michael impacted this area in 2018, but it has rebuilt itself and continues to attract families looking for fun in the sun. In fact, tourism has rebounded strongly, showing a growth of almost 40% in 2021 compared to the year prior, according to the Panama City Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau. Kids can learn about the ocean while enjoying the beach vibes.

10. Key West

Last but not least, Key West offers a unique experience unlike any other city in Florida. Families can explore the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, go snorkeling, and visit the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. The city’s relaxed atmosphere provides a refreshing break from busier tourist cities. Interestingly, since it’s a bit of a trek from the mainland, many families find excitement in the journey itself, traveling across the scenic Overseas Highway. Numerous families flock to Key West every year, making it a buzz-worthy family vacation hotspot.

Final Thoughts

From theme parks and historical sites to beautiful beaches and nature adventures, Florida has something for every family to enjoy. Each city offers unique experiences, ensuring that both parents and children will have endless fun and lasting memories from their trip. So grab your kids, plan your next adventure, and discover the wonders of Florida together!
