Ligonier is a village in Cedar County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 40 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated village in the state of Nebraska.
The village was laid out in 1887 by Ferdinand Ligonier, a Michigan logger who had traveled to the county to check out the timber prospects. He chose to settle here instead for the surrounding hills and the nearby creek. Soon after, he platted a town at the intersection of two existing wagon roads and began selling parcels of the land. The town was initially called Ligonier, after the post office was established in 1889. As more settlers arrived, a business district developed. The town grew steadily until the late 1930s when the Great Depression and a drought caused many of the farmers to seek refuge in the nearby cities.
Over time, the village grew to include a variety of businesses, including several general stores, a gas station, and two churches. In recent years, the village has seen a resurgence of interest, especially among younger families.
