Tipton is a city in Cedar County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 180 at the 2010 census. Its name is derived from the surname Tipton, the maiden name of the mother of the town's first postmaster.
History
Tipton was originally called Maple Creek Station when the Nebraska Central Railroad was built in the area in 1887. It lay at the intersection of two roads, one of which was the Omaha and Northwestern Railroad. On August 29 of that same year, a post office was established in the settlement and given the name Tipton due to the fact that the first postmaster was the son of a Mrs. H. Tipton, of whom the town was pleased to honor. The name was incorporated on July 24, 1888.
Tipton soon became complete with a hotel, general store, lumber yard, hardware store, and a few smaller stores. The settlers here were mostly of Prussian ancestry and the town grew with several churches of its own and a German language newspaper.
The city of Tipton today is a rural agricultural center in Nebraska. Its main economic activity is the production of corn, soybeans and wheat, though there are beef cattle, hogs, sheep, and poultry farms in the area as well. The main sources of employment outside of agriculture include logging, transportation, banking, and health care.
The town is also home to a museum which has a collection of artifacts from the past. The museum houses collections of Native American artifacts, early pioneers, early settler's homes and stores, local history related artifacts, and artifacts dating back to the Civil War. The museum is open Thursday and Saturday and is a great place to learn about the history of the town.
Tipton has become known for its many festivals and special events that occur in the summer, including the Cedar-Tipton County Fair and Tiptonfest.
