Jeffersonville is a small rural village in York County, Nebraska, United States. It is located just 2 miles north of York, Nebraska, and is in the jurisdiction of the York County Board of Supervisors. The population was 237 at the 2010 census. It is part of the York micropolitan area.
The town was originally known as Waco after the city of Waco, Texas. But when it was made a post office in 1887, that name was already in use for a post office in Johnson County, Nebraska. The village was subsequently named after Thomas Jefferson.
The first settlers arrived in the area in the late 19th century, lured by the vast open prairies, plentiful wild game, and the possibility of finding a new way of life. They built houses, dug wells, constructed churches and bridges, and slowly began to make a living by farming the land. Early industries included a creamery, a tile and lumber yard, and a grain elevator, along with small businesses, such as a grocery store and a barber shop.
Today, Jeffersonville is a close-knit community of just over 200 people. Agriculture is still the primary industry in the area; however, some residents commute to York and other nearby towns for work. The village boasts a thriving K-8 school and various parks, churches, and community organizations.
