how did california get its name

California got its name from the novel "Las Sergas de Esplandián" by Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo, which was published in 1510. In the novel, California is described as a mythical island paradise ruled by Queen Calafia and inhabited by beautiful black women who are skilled in the art of war.

When Spanish explorers first arrived in the area that is now California, they believed it to be an island and named it "California" after the mythical island in the novel. The name stuck, and over time, it came to be used to refer to the entire region.

So, in essence, California got its name from a work of fiction, and it has since become one of the most famous and well-known states in the United States.
