Hinesville is the county seat of Liberty County, Georgia. Located near the Atlantic coast and bordering the South Carolina state line, the city of approximately 33,000 has evolved since its founding in 1837.
Prior to 1837, the area now known as Hinesville was occupied by Native American tribes. Its first European settlers were former slaves of Colonel Richard Richardson of Midway, who freed them in exchange for their work on his land. After being granted a land charter from the state of Georgia, the newly freed African Americans moved to the area and created a village known as Franksville, named after the prominent freedman, Abner Frank.
In 1837, the city, then known as White Hill, was incorporated and the name later changed to Hinesville. The new name was in honor of Dr. Georgia Hines, who spearheaded the effort to bring a post office to the newly formed city. Hinesville officially became the county seat of Liberty County in 1864, and experienced slow and steady growth as farms and timber mills cropped up around the area.
In the 1940s, the population of Hinesville jumped due to the establishment of nearby Fort Stewart and the accompanying military base. This influx of military personnel continued over the following decades as the city grew and developed a sizable population of active and retired veterans.
Today, Hinesville is a bustling small city, with a vibrant downtown area.
