Deltona was originally established in 1962 as a planned residential community. It was named after Deltona Lakes, a real estate development created by Elliott, Robert, and Frank Mackle, who arrived in the area in 1922. They opened a general store near the lake, located on what is now LakeHelen-Osteen Road. Deltona Lakes was originally meant to be a retirement community, and grew rapidly in the 1960s. In 1972, the community became an incorporated city, and the first city manager, Earl Hazelwood, was appointed.
Deltona is now a residential city, with some commercial development. The city is home to businesses such as UPS, Lowe’s, Wal-Mart, and Ives Dairy Farm. The city also has a number of parks, recreation facilities, and golf courses.
