Brandon is an unincorporated census-designated place in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. It is located in the eastern part of the Tampa Bay Area. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 103,483.
The area was first discovered by explorer Hernando de Soto in 1539, and was later explored by Captain James McKay in the early 1800s while he was charting the southern shoreline of Tampa Bay. The town began to develop more rapidly in the late 1870s, when the South Florida Railroad began to connect the area to downtown Tampa and other parts of Florida.
