History & Information of Alafaya, FL
Alafaya is a census-designated place (CDP) in Orange County, Florida, United States. The population was 98,409 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford statistical area. Plants and animals common to the area include oaks, pines, hawks, Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes, armadillos and gopher tortoises.
Alafaya was built upon the large livestock and desert farmlands of the 1940s and locals remember seeing horses and sand roads on frequent occasions. Today, Alafaya stands as a highly populated residential area with most of the local business consisting of residential retail stores and restaurants. There is a high population of University of Central Florida students living in Alafaya.
The planned development of Alafaya began in the 1950s and by the late 1990s it had reached its current size. The community added many residential subdivisions, apartments and condominiums, schools, a park, a golf course and greenbelt trails. A fire station was built in 1981 and a Walmart was added in 1996.
