History & Information About Science World

Science World is a science centre located in Vancouver, British Columbia. It consists of a science theatre, a feature exhibition gallery and hundreds of interactive displays. Founded in 1977, the centre features a large domed OMNIMAX theatre, the only one in Canada west of Toronto, which shows various films in the 15-per-minute IMAX format.

The centre’s founders included several prominent people, including the late Harry J. Franklin, then-president of BC Hydro and Power Authority, Omand York, the late B.C. Attorney General Allan Williams, and Frank Mackay, then-executive vice-president of BC Hydro.

In 1994, Science World at Telus World of Science opened in its current building on Vancouver’s False Creek. This facility features the iconic geodesic dome structure which was once part of Expo 86. The dome was reused and erected in its current form in 1989.

Science World offers a variety of educational programs for all ages, with the goal to spark curiosity and inspire learning. These programs bring hands-on science experiences to students of all ages to help them explore various areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.

In 2009, the centre opened their first travelling exhibit, Genetics: Unlocking the Code of Life. Then in 2010, they opened the world’s first OMNIMAX theatre built specifically for 3D projection.

Science World also produces and broadcasts the popular television series Science World Show, which has had over 18 seasons. The show takes viewers around the world and into the lab to explore the scientific concepts in the feature film and other video clips.
