Moody, Alabama is a small city located in St. Clair County, in the heart of the Appalachian foothills. It is situated near I-20 and near Birmingham, the state’s largest city. The city has a population of approximately 11,000 people as of the 2019 census estimate.
Moody got its start when the Alabama Department of Transportation improved a dirt road from Odenville to Pell City in 1929. Five of the families living in the area met to discuss the forming of a new town, which they named Moody. The railroad built tracks nearby, and the post office was established shortly thereafter.
The city grew slowly but steadily throughout the middle of the 20th century, with the first bank opening in 1943 and the first elementary school in 1956. Even more growth occurred during the 1970s, with the opening of the city’s first church, medical facility, and childcare center.
Today, Moody continues to be a small but thriving community. It boasts a number of shops and restaurants, as well as an active arts and cultural scene. Moody is also known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, including a public pool, disc golf course, and numerous parks and trails. The city is also home to a vibrant industrial sector, with numerous factories and businesses located in the area.
1. Moody is home to the historic 1891 The Rex Theater – a single-screen movie theater operated by the same family over five generations. It is the oldest continuously-operated theater in the state and one of only four remaining single-screen theaters in Alabama.
