Montevallo is a city in Shelby and Chilton counties in the U.S. state of Alabama. The population was 6,325 at the 2010 census. It is home to the University of Montevallo, a public liberal arts university, as well as the Alabama School of Fine Arts.
The town was incorporated in December 1889 and is the second-oldest incorporated municipality in Shelby County. The city became a typical commercial center of the rural county and retained its incorporation after the Shelby County county seat moved from Columbiana to nearby Calera in 1887.
The town is best known as the site of the University of Montevallo, which was founded in 1896 by the Alabama Legislature as the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School. In 1965 it became the first state-supported institution to become coeducational. It serves as a regional cultural center, being home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and two notable historic districts, the Orrville and Montevallo Historic Districts. The University also hosts one of the few remaining one-room schoolhouses in Alabama. The Montevallo Historical Museum features many artifacts, documents, photographs and audiovisual materials pertaining to the history of the town and the surrounding area.
