Lanett, Alabama is a city in Chambers County located along the state’s border with Georgia. The city had a population of 6,468 according to the 2010 census and is the county seat of Chambers County.
The city was founded in 1858 when the Chambers County Railroad was set up to link the town of LaFayette in Alabama to Columbus, Georgia. The railroad brought growth to the city and in 1861 Lanett-Lafayette-Columbus was reorganized as the West Point Railroad and it was later known as the West Point Route.
The town of Lanett grew rapidly in the late 19th century and was incorporated in 1890 as the first city in Chambers County. In the early 20th century, the city was a strong industrial and trade center and had a number of large mills.
The economy of the town suffered during the Great Depression, but the city was revitalized by the opening of Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia during World War II. This led to an influx of soldiers and their families and created jobs in the area.
In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Lanett has seen the closure of many of its mills, but the city is still a vibrant commercial center with a number of stores and businesses in its downtown area.
