History & Information About Kelowna City

Kelowna is a city on Okanagan Lake in the Okanagan Valley in the southern interior of British Columbia, Canada. It is the largest city in the region and ranks as the 22nd largest metropolitan area in Canada. Kelowna is the third-largest metropolitan area in the province and the second-largest in the Interior after the nearby city of Kamloops.

The city is also the administrative and cultural centre for the Central Okanagan Regional District. It is a member municipality of the Central Okanagan Regional District. The economy of the city is based mainly on light industry, servicing and tourism. Film production also plays an important role in the city’s economy. Kelowna is home to many wineries and scenic vineyards, which attract visitors from around the world.

Kelowna was first settled in 1859–1860 by a small group of settlers led by Father Charles Pandosy, an Oblate missionary.Founded as a trading post, it remained a small village until the arrival of a large influx of settlers and displaced First Nations people in the early 1880s. In 1886, the Kelowna Lumber Company was built at present-day Dilworth Drive and Maple Street, which started the commercial lumber and industry boom in the region.

The current name of the city originates from an Okanagan language term for “grizzly bear”. The first inhabitants of the area, the Syilx Okanagan people, speak an Okanagan language called Syilx.
