Kamloops is a city in British Columbia, Canada. It is the largest city in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, with a population of 95,216 as of the 2021 Canadian census. The city is situated in the valley of the North and South Thompson Rivers, between the Shuswap and Okanagan valleys.

Kamloops was founded in 1812 by the North West Company explorer David Stuart, who named the area “Kamloops House” for its numerous fish traps. The name later changed to Kamloops, an adaptation of the local First Nations term for “meeting of the waters”: ah k’om loyps.

Kamloops was the centre of the Shuswap Nation’s trading net, providing access to coastal supplies and exports—including salmon, dried fish, and hides—to the hinterland. It was also the centre of the fur trade throughout the early 19th century.
