Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a city located in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. In 1889, gold prospectors Paddy Hannan, Tom Flanagan and Danny Shea stumbled upon the largest gold nugget ever found in Australia, now known as the Welcome Stranger nugget. Six years later, the Victorian Government sent 600 people to the area and the township of Kalgoorlie was created. The original name for the town was “Hannan’s Find”, but it was later changed to Kalgoorlie, derived from the Aboriginal word “Kalgurli”.

In 1899, the township of Boulder was established with the original name of “Kalgoorlie – Boulder”, embracing both the towns. This business district section of Kalgoorlie was then declared a city in 1989, with separate administration of services but a joint promotion of the area.
