Helena is a city located in western central Shelby County, Alabama. It is considered part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. It is 22 miles south of the city center of Birmingham, and about a mile north of the Cahaba River. Helena was initially incorporated in 1906 and was established as a community near the Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad.

The city was named after Helena, Missouri, the hometown of its first postmaster. In 1900, there were 603 people living in Helena. By 2000, this number had grown to 13,652. Today, Helena has a population of approximately 17,400.

Most of the city’s economic growth can be attributed to its success as a regional industrial center. Notable employers include McWane, Inc., Performance Pipe, Vulcan Chemical, Alabama Power and the Toyota Automotive Parts Plant. The central city is also home to many restaurants, retail stores, and businesses.

In addition to providing industry and commercial opportunities, Helena is known for its recreational activities. It boasts over 55 public parks spanning almost 600 acres, a performing arts center, two golf courses, a YMCA, and several public Libraries. The Helena Civic Center hosts a variety of activities throughout the year, including concerts, festivals, and sports tournaments. Residents also benefit from the area’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage, evidenced through landmarks such as Old Helena Historic District, Sparta Academy and numerous churches and community landmarks.
