Guelph, located in southwestern Ontario, is a city of over 128,000 people, located approximately 100 kilometres west of Toronto. It is also part of the Golden Horseshoe region and the Greater Toronto Area.

In 1827, the area now known as Guelph was the site of a new settlement being created by a Scotsman named John Galt, who was a major figure in the development of Upper Canada in the early 19th century. His intention was to establish a model village which could serve as a “Canadian Eden”. The settlement was named after the Royal House of Hanover in England, hence the “Guelph” designation.
