Gardendale is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 13,893 at the 2010 census. Gardendale is a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, and is located just north of the city.
Gardendale was first settled in 1906 when a landowner, J.F. Riley, donated 288 acres of land to an African-American church only a mile south of the town. The first school was built in Gardendale in 1907. In the early 1900s, there were many farms and fields located in the area that served as the foundation for the city.
Gardendale was officially incorporated as a city in 1955, with a mayor-council form of government. In 1975, the city adopted a mayor-council-manager form of government. The current mayor of Gardendale is Stan Hogeland.
Gardendale is served by the Gardendale City School System, and is home to the Gardendale High School ‘Rocket’, which won the Alabama class 3A state championships in football in 2004 and 2009.
Gardendale is also home to the world famous All Steak Hamburgers, which opened in 1965 and continues to serve hamburgers and steak burgers to this day.
