Fort Payne is a city in DeKalb County, Alabama. It was founded in 1850 and was named after MajorJohn Payne, a member of the federal government survey team. The city is known as the “Official Sock Capital of the World” due to its thriving sock-manufacturing industry. This industry was started in the late 1880s by Colonel John Thomas Blevins and his brother, Elijah Blevins. The brothers saw the potential for selling socks to the thousands of miners that were working in the coal mines in the area. By World War I, Fort Payne had become one of the leading hosiery-manufacturing centers of the United States.
