Enterprise is a small city located in southeastern Alabama in Coffee County. According to the 2010 census, the population was 26,561.
Enterprise was originally known as Taylor’s Stand, named after John Henry Taylor, the first storekeeper in the area and an early settler. It later became known as Philipsville, after John Philip Davis, who owned the land at the crossroads of two stage coach routes.
In 1881, the town was officially changed to Enterprise by the post office in honor of the whiskey distillery nearby. The town became an incorporated city in 1893, although its government was dissolved in the 1950s due to a lack of interest.
In 1907, the Boll Weevil Monument was erected in Enterprise to commemorate the destruction of the cotton industry by the boll weevil. The town is also home to Enterprise State Community College, founded in 1967 as part of the Alabama State School System.
Enterprise is the birthplace of renowned pilot Jimmy Doolittle, who was born in the city in 1896. The city is also home to a Space Shuttle Columbia Memorial, which honors seven astronauts who died when the spacecraft disintegrated upon re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere in 2003.
Today, the city of Enterprise is known as a hub of recreation in the Wiregrass Region.
