History & Information About Devonport City

Football Club

Devonport City Football Club, commonly known as Devonport City and nicknamed ‘The City’, are an Australian semi-professional soccer club based in the City of Devonport, Tasmania. The club currently competes in the NPL Tasmania, having been promoted at the end of the 2019 NPL Tasmania season.

The club was founded in 1971 by a group of local footballers, and the team entered the Devonport & District Soccer Association in 1973. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Devonport City remained in the local Devonport association, where they experienced great success. In 1992, the club moved to the Northern Tasmanian Soccer League, and two years later they were crowned premier and in 1995 the champions.

In 1998, the club entered the Southern Premier League, the top tier of football in Tasmania, and competed there until 2005 when they entered the Tasmanian State League. In 2010, the club secured promotion to the NPL Tasmania for the first time in its history, and they finished second in the league that year, qualifying for the Grand Final which they ultimately lost on penalties.

Since joining the NPL Tasmania in 2010, the club have established themselves as a competitive force in the league, regularly fighting for the title and for a place in the top four at the end of the season, which would guarantee them a place in the following year’s FFA Cup.

In 2019 the club secured promotion to the NPL Tasmania’s top flight after finishing runners-up in the NPL Tasmania 2 competition. They now compete in the NPL Tasmania alongside Tasmania’s other top teams, including South Hobart, Glenorchy Knights, Devonport Strikers and Clarence Zebras. The club is managed by Andy Ross, who has been in charge since 2017 and guided the club to immediate success in the NPL Tasmania 2 competition.
