Demopolis is a city located in Marengo County, Alabama. It was established in 1819 as the first nucleus of Anglo-American settlement in the former Mississippi Territory. It is named after the 7 battles that happened to decide who owned the settlement.
The city originally flourished as a port along the Tombigbee River, taking advantage of its location near the trading bloc between what was then the United States and the rest of the region, often called the Black Belt. It later became an important link in the town-to-town stagecoach line that passed through the region.
Today, Demopolis is home to a variety of industries, including government offices, health care, food processing, manufacturing, retail and service businesses, as well as a number of outdoor recreational opportunities. The city is recognized for its historic architecture, which includes antebellum homes, a Confederate memorial, and a nationally-designated historic district.
Demopolis has a population of roughly 7,400 people and covers an area of 15 square miles. It is the county seat for Marengo County and is home to two post-secondary institutions: Lurleen B.
