Daphne is a city located in Baldwin County, Alabama. It is a suburb of Mobile, Alabama and is approximately nine miles east of the city. The population of Daphne is over 25,000 and the city covers an area of approximately 14.9 square miles.
The city of Daphne was first established in 1874 along the Fairhope Bayou. It was initially known as Burnside, but the name was changed to Daphne in 1879 in honor of the legendary Greek nymph, Daphne. The city was first incorporated by an act of the Alabama Legislature in 1911 with the first mayor being Robert Miller.
Daphne grew slowly in the early days, mainly due to its proximity to Mobile, which was the economic hub of the region. However, the city experienced rapid growth in the 1970s and 1980s due to its location on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay and its mild climate. Daphne continues to be a popular suburban area, and it has been featured in several films and television shows, including The Sweetest Thing and Grown Ups 2.
