Clay is a small town located in St. Clair County in the state of Alabama. It is a part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is approximately 21 miles east of Birmingham. The town was established in 1880 as an agricultural community. In 1990, the town had a population of 1414 people.

The town was originally a stop on the Southern Railway; however, that eventually stopped due to the general decline of the railroads throughout the region. The town was also affected by the Depression. After World War II, the town began to slowly grow due to light industrial growth.
