Calera is a city located within Shelby County, Alabama in the United States. The city is situated about 25 miles south of the city of Birmingham and is also part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area. The population as of the 2010 United States Census was 6,980, and the current estimated population is now around 10,000.

The city of Calera was originally founded in 1832 and was originally called Spicer’s Spring. In the year 1848, the town was renamed Calera after the Spanish word for “limestone”, which is what the town’s major industry was in the early days. The name comes from a type of white, chalky-clay used for manufacturing lime and producing high-grade cement.

Calera maintained its rural character until the late 1990s, when the city’s population began to rapidly increase as the population of Birmingham and other cities in the area increased and the city began to experience suburban sprawl. This led to the city’s annexation of 835 acres, 4 miles north of the city limits, in order to accommodate the town’s growth.

Today, Calera is a vibrant, growing community known for its wonderful family-friendly neighborhoods, beautiful parks and recreational areas, and excellent schools. With easy access to major highways, many businesses, and family-energy neighborhoods, Calera is a great place to call home.

2. Calera is the place of origin of the popular fast food chain, Jack’s, which started in the late 1950s.

4. The city was incorporated in 1886 as Calera Junction, but later renamed to Calera after a railroad president who wanted to honor his daughter, Clara.

5. Calera is the world’s only boll weevil capital, thanks to its abundance of cotton production and boll weevil statue overlooking town.

6. In the summer, Calera is home to the Southern Skies Hot Air Balloon Festival, which takes place in the town’s Old Town Square.

7. The Calera Public Museum is located in Calera, showcasing local artifacts such as the original Civil War flag, furniture from the 1800s, military uniforms, and a vast variety of farm and commercial tools.

8. The site of the Battle of Ulla’s Ford and nearby skirmishes are located just outside of Calera. The action of this battle is represented by a war memorial at the nearby Stephens Cemetery.
